HRH Princess Letizia of Spain sure does take naturally to ruffling feathers. During Pope Benedict XVI’s recent visit to Spain the Princess was seen in outfits some are calling inappropriate. The noise is primarily around the August 19th photo op of the Spanish royal family and the Pope. The first issue was that the Princess of Asturias wore a skirt that stopped short of her knees. At many times this left them uncovered, a violation of protocol during meetings with the pontiff. The other issue with her outfit is that she wore a color very close to white. Tradition is that only the queen of a Catholic nation can wear white while meeting with the pope. So HM Queen Sofia is entitled, as is someone like HRH Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, but Princess Letizia is not. The color of the dress is visually off-white, but it was too close for many in the waiting press. This isn’t the first time she has had issues such as these, she was also criticized for wearing white during a meeting with Benedict at Santiago de Compostela, and another time she was photographed sitting next to the pontiff in a gray outfit that left her knees completely uncovered. Princess Letitiza has a tough time with the press, and this faux pas sure doesn’t help.
