Princess Diana's popularity never waned and today there's evidence in the form of $1.2 million from an auction of her gowns, which points to her still being as popular as ever. The most sought-after gown in the auction was the royal blue number that she wore to the White House the night she danced with John Travolta in 1985, according to USA Today on March 19, 2013.
It's been 16-years since Diana passed away, but her evening gowns fetched prices far above the prices paid for the new creations often seen at red carpet affairs. The London auction offered a collection of some of her most memorable evening gowns, like the figure hugging gown she wore while cutting a rug with Travolta.
The navy blue velvet gown by Victor Edelstein brought in the most money out of all the gowns when it sold for about $384,000. This was slightly below what the gown was thought to have fetched, but it was still a great deal of money. This gown was well documented in pictures of Diana with Travolta doing some fancy dance moves at the White House.
In 1985, Princess Diana and Prince Charles visited the White House after receiving an invitation from President Regan. They were invited to a gala dinner with other notable names. The pictures taken that night as she danced with Travolta are some of the most famous images of the late Diana.
The gown that Diana wore for the Vanity Fair cover that was shot at Kensington Palace also was in the group at this auction. That black velvet and beaded gown went for about $173,000.
