HRH Princess Claire is known for being more reserved and laid back, but even she has a breaking point. Last week, RTBF aired a controversial documentary adding fuel to the fire around her husband, HRH Prince Laurent, the so-called enfant terrible of the Belgian Royal Family. The documentary added theft and domestic violence to the list of the Prince’s faults along with being a horrible driver and making poor decisions without the approval of the palace. Yesterday the Prince unveiled a project allowing homeless people to receive housing assistance with their animals. As the Prince spoke to the media he commented that he hoped events like these showed people who he really is. He said:
"Let me set something straight. I am an animal lover, but also a people lover. What matters is what you see in yourself in the mirror at night."
When the questions around the documentary continued, Princess Claire emotionally stepped in:
"I think now enough is enough. You also have three children. These insinuations are wrong.”
The look on Prince Laurent’s face when she was finished expressed some surprise at the forcefulness of his wife’s statement. The accusations of domestic violence are obviously the most distressing. The report sourced an ex-girlfriend of the Prince. The charges are uncorroborated and were unreported in the mid-90’s when they were said to have occurred. Prince Laurent and Princess Claire have been married since 2003, they have three children TRH Princess Louise and twins Prince Nicolas and Prince Aymeric.
