‘Princess Bride’ t-shirt causes panic on flight

Many quote the movie, and many have seen it on multiple occasions. But, according to a Jan. 22 article from a New Zealand publication called Stuff, it looks like there are people who still have yet to see the 1987 classic, “The Princess Bride.”

Wynand Mullins, a Kiwi living in Sydney, Australia, boarded his flight to Auckland, New Zealand early Sunday evening wearing a t-shirt with a popular quote from the Rob Reiner-directed film. The t-shirt has a design of a large name tag on the front with the phrase: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

It’s one of the most memorable lines from the film, but passengers and attendants apparently didn’t get the humor. Mullins told Stuff that he is used to receiving weird looks, many of which he received while waiting in line to board his flight. But he called the reaction to his shirt “a bit over the top.”

“The flight attendant said to me: ‘Are you able to remove it, because some of the passengers are quite intimidated by it.’ I thought it was all a bit silly. The person next to me was laughing, because they knew the movie.”

Mullins said he didn’t have any other shirts to wear and requested an attendant to get him another one. The attendant left and never returned to service Mullins.

“I wouldn't be surprised if they had someone watching me the whole time,” Mullins said.

A spokesman for Qantas said they had no record of the incident, so the people on board must have handled it accordingly.

“Qantas does have dress standards for passengers travelling on our aircraft . . . particularly for slogans which other passengers may find offensive or threatening.”

Mullins said that while the reaction was “a bit over the top,” it was also “a bit comical.”

A photo of Mullins wearing the shirt can be found here.

Mandy Patinkin, who played Inigo Montoya, said in a 2012 interview with New York Magazine that two to three fans a day quote the phrase back to him. Patinkin said he is “frankly thrilled about it.”
