Prince Philip undergoes heart surgery

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband has undergone heart surgery after being admitted to the hospital Friday, December 23, 2011 for chest pains.

The Duke of Edinburgh was flown by helicopter to Papworth Hospital from the Queen's estate, Sandringham, located in Norfolk Friday evening where the Royal family were gathering to celebrate Christmas.

Prince Philip was found to have a blocked coronary artery and after successful placement of a stent, Prince Philip is said to be resting peacefully.  Members of the Royal family are expected to visit Prince Philip at the hospital today.  The palace issued a statement that said Prince Philip would remain in the hospital under observation for a short period.  No other details were released.

Prince Philip, 90, has been active in his charitable work as a member of the royal family and had just announced that he would be passing most of his working duties on to other members of the royal family last summer.

The Prince anticipates celebrating a world tour with Queen Elizabeth II next year as she marks her 60th year on the throne.  The prince has been married to Queen Elizabeth for 64 years.
