Prince Philip was released from hospital today, December 27, at around 9:25 a.m. The Queen's husband had spent four days in hospital following emergency heart surgery and, according to reports, was itching to get out from the start. According to "The Telegraph," Prince Philip headed straight for a shoot being held in a secluded part of Sandringham, where those outside couldn't see what was going on -- shooting pheasants doesn't endear the royals to many.
However, the Duke of Edinburgh didn't ignore all his doctors' advice: He didn't join in the shoot, but joined his family to watch and had lunch at Wood Farm in Wolferton, which is part of the Sandringham estate.
Well-wishers were on hand to collect the prince, who was fetched in a convoy of two Range Rovers and an Audi. Prince Philip reportedly also thanked staff at the hospital for their "excellent care."
The Duke of Edinburgh seemed pleased to be out of Papworth Hospital and waved from the passenger seat as he started the one-hour journey to Sandringham. He also looked a little gray and tired, and no doubt there is rest and recuperation in his future. Fortunately, this is something he can now do with his close-knit family.
