On August 18, Prince Harry became the latest member of the British Royal Family to show his support for those affected by the August riots. Temporarily leaving his helicopter training in Suffolk, the prince paid a visit to fire crews in Salford, Manchester's next-door neighbor city and site of some of the copycat rioting.
The Telegraph reported Prince Harry as saying how shocked he was at the rioting. He was taken to a high street that had been torn apart by looting and vandalism, where he was cheered by local well-wishers and met local store managers whose businesses had been burned or vandalized.
Police Constable Andy Sheridan said that the local police had "coped" by working 13 shifts in a row, and that almost everyone involved had been injured in some way. Emergency crews had actually been targeted for airborne bricks, stones and tire spikes.
The Prince said he'd seen some of the footage on television and YouTube. When it came time to talk to businessmen whose insurance covered less than a third of the damage caused, the truth, it would appear, was far beyond what could be conveyed in video and Prince Harry was reportedly "shocked."
