A series of never-before-seen photos of Prince Harry in Afghanistan have been released now that the Apache helicopter pilot is on his way home from the war zone. The photos, taken between October and December 2012, were released in two waves by the Ministry of Defense today (Tuesday) and Monday and obtained by Examiner.com.

The series of pictures show Prince Harry's accommodations, him inspecting his aircraft, the pilot in the cockpit of his Apache helicopter, and a few relaxed shots of the 28-year-old around Christmas. The holiday-time pictures capture Prince Harry's sense of humor even in such a dangerous situation. He is seen wearing a Santa hat with long white braids.
The only other photos of Prince Harry in Afghanistan were taken the day he arrived -- back in September. The newly released pictures were taken by a pool camera, but held from the media until now in an effort not to endanger the high-profile solider. "I never wanted you guys to be out here," CNN quotes him as telling a news producer. "There was an agreement made to invite you out on the deal that the media didn't speculate before my deployment. That's the only reason you guys are out here."
Prince Harry was deployed to Afghanistan for the second time in September 2012. He and his unit were stationed at Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan. As part of the 100-strong 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment, Army Air Corps, Harry's squadron's mission is to, "provide surveillance, deterrence and, when required, close combat attack capabilities as well as escort duties for other aircraft."
