HRH Prince Carl Philip and his girlfriend Sofia Hellqvist took some time yesterday to answer the rumors of a growing rift between HRH Princess Madeleine, the Prince’s sister, and Sofia. After finishing a ski race the couple spoke to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet where Sofia stated clearly:
“It is sad the teenage drama that has been painted by the media. There is no such thing, and there has never been. [Madeleine and I] have a great relationship.”
While the rumors of an issue with Princess Madeleine have been ongoing, they seemed to have flared up in the press after Prince Carl Philip and Sofia were absent from Princess Estelle’s birthday celebrations. The Prince gave a very simple explanation that it was simply a case of conflicting calendars:
“We all are both sad and upset that it has painted a picture of any family feud. We obviously celebrate Estelle. She is a real little ray of sunshine that spreads joy throughout our family.”
While this hopefully puts to rest the issue for now, until Princess Madeleine returns to Sweden these rumors will undoubtedly continue to come up.
The Swedish newspaper also asked where the relationship of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia might be headed long term. While many in the public deem her to be unsuitable due to a past that included risqué modeling and a reality show, the tide seems to be turning the longer the two stay together. When directly asked about their future plans, both initially said they “enjoy the relationship as it is” and that there was “no pressure, no stress” to get married. The Prince smiled and said: “But of course, we see a future together. That's why we are with each other.” The couple have been dating since 2010 and living together since 2011.
