For over twenty years, bass virtuoso Les Claypool has led Primus on a musical journey that has astounded, bewildered, and wildly entertained a legion of loyalists. Playing a taut brand of complex funk rock that is informed by such unrelated artists as Rush, Tom Waits and King Crimson, Primus has also been openly oddball, pulling from an underground grab bag that is filled with musical tidbits from the likes of Frank Zappa and fellow Bay Area denizens the Residents. On paper, this mix might seem a recipe for obscurity, but quite the opposite is true, as Primus has maintained a fiercely devoted fanbase that continually causes the band’s releases to go Gold.
Their latest, which was released November 2011, is Green Naugahyde. According to Allmusic.com, “On its seventh studio album, (Primus) continues with a collection of songs that are both technically dazzling and perfectly irreverent. In a lot of ways, the album feels like Primus are getting back to basics, with songs like “Hennepin Crawler” immediately evoking the directness of Frizzle Fry.”
