Primping with your pup: Mark Garrison Salon

So you need to get your hair done, but have been at work all day and don’t want to leave your dog home alone for yet another hour. The solution? Get your hair done at Mark Garrison Salon, where pups are not only allowed, but welcome with open arms.

Eli has been going with me to Mark Garrison Salon ever since we won a cut and color at Wendy Diamond’s Animal Fair Magazine Halloween Costume Contest in 2008. I have to admit that I first went to the salon very hesitant to try a new stylist. I was already happy with the one I was going to, after years of mishaps and incidents, ranging from returning home with a cut neck, dealing with sexual harassment and pot smoking on the job, to calling for an appointment only to find out my stylist was in jail. With all those misfortunes, why would I even consider leaving somebody good?

But both the stylist and colorists at Mark Garrison did a great job, resulting in a cut that lasted for months and a color that looked natural and chic. The atmosphere was much more comfortable and relaxed than other salons.  (No loud techno music or coked up stylists constantly looking in the mirror and thinking about their next night on the town.)

Eli’s presence was also very appreciated by everybody at the salon. I was hooked. We have been going there ever since.

During a recent visit, I had the opportunity to finally meet the owner, Mark Garrison, and talk to him about his love of dogs. It turns out that Mark has made a habit of only adopting rescue dogs, has regularly been a sponsor at adoption events, and has even hosted fundraisers for rescue groups at his salon.

Interestingly, without realizing it, Eli and I had met Mark once before when he dried my hair after a cut. I remember thinking at the time that he seemed way over-qualified to be drying hair. Mark is obviously down to earth and not above any task, including that of drying a dog owner’s hair… and helping dogs find loving homes.

Every experience at Mark Garrison seems better than the one before, and that is the key to good business. (That, and, of course, letting us bring our dogs.)
