Primordial Hydra is a green mythic rare debuting in the Magic: The Gathering 2012 Core Set. While previous Hydras have been “creature fireballs”, Primordial Hydra can grow to lethal proportions very quickly without any combat or mana requirements. Primordial Hydra was previewed today on the official Magic: The Gathering site.

Creature – Hydra Mythic Rare
Primordial Hydra enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
At the beginning of your upkeep, double the number of +1/+1 counters on Primordial Hydra.
Primordial Hydra has trample as long as it has 10 or more +1/+1 counters on it.
Sure, you can proliferate to add counters to your massive green monster, but even playing this for 4 mana as a 2/2 will have you swinging with a 4/4, 8/8, and yes, 16/16 in just a few turns. And that 16/16 has trample.
Primordial Hydra is a threat that must be dealt with almost immediately, as it will spiral into a multi-headed beast able to dish out enough damage to kill your opponent twice in a single blow.
Primordial Hydra will be excellent in Commander where it will benefit from coming out as 5/5 or larger, absolutely crush in Limited (definitely first pickable – if your opponent doesn’t come up with a hard removal spell fast the game just ends), and could be the most constructed viable Hydra Magic has seen in some time.
Get your first chance to play with this doubling disaster at Magic: The Gathering 2012 Core Set prerelease events, kicking off July 9-10.
