'Primary Flight' soars In Wynwood

While on a recent guided tour with Primary Flight’s BOOKSIIII and Typoe, I was able to see what an interesting and innovative collaboration this project is. Not to be confused with the recent “Wynwood Walls” (by Deitch Projects and Goldman Properties) during Art Basel Miami Beach, the Primary Flight organizers proudly hold the title of the world’s largest site-specific street level mural installation.

Primary Flight’s original curatorial collaborative include founders Booksllll, Andrew Black, and Anthony Spinello. Since its inception in 2007, Primary Flight has grown quickly from 15 to over 100 artists. This diverse group of international artists includes some founders of the street, stencil, graffiti, and skate art movements. The majority of them travel to Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach each year. They collaborate on walls located throughout the Wynwood Art District, and these murals remain throughout the year at the discretion of the building owners. In fact, most of the original murals from 2007 remain.

Notable participating artists include: Augor, Askew, Bask, Blek Le Rat, Boxi, David Choe, Crome, Cycle, Michael De Feo, Dare, Depoe, Dolla Lama, Ellis G, El Mac, Tristan Eaton, Emit, Ron English, Ewok, Shepard Fairey, Frerk, Logan Hicks, Andy Howell, Kofie, Lady Pink, The London Police, MSG, Kenton Parker, Parskid, Pose, Push, Retna, Revok, Reyes, Rime, Risk, Santiago Rubino, Kenny Scharf, Scribe, Sever, She Kills He, Chris Stain, TCP, Tes One, Typoe, WK Interact, Witness, Marc C. Woehr and Agustina Woodgate.

Primary Flight is a showcase and launch pad for some street artists, and a return to their roots for others such as Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf and Ron English, all of whom have a street art background, and now work in fine art

Each year this exciting project combines a selection of top galleries from around the world with a program of street exhibitions, parties, and crossover events featuring music, film, architecture and design. The 2009 edition of Primary Flight kicked off with the help of headliner (dj) Shepard Fairey, and a soundtrack curated by Beats By Dr. Dre. The artist roster, content and programming continually grows stronger.

Primary Flight is well worth a visit.
