Primal Fear Q&A: Vocalist Ralf Scheepers talks 'Delivering the Black'

Ralf Scheepers and Primal Fear return this month with their 10th studio album, “Delivering the Black". It is arguably the band’s best record since 2005′s “Seven Seals“. The album falls on heels of their most successful record, 2012′s “Unbreakable“. This week, Scheepers touched base with The Examiner to discuss the direction of “Delivering the Black“, the band’s upcoming Eagles and Lions Tour 2014, staying in shape, and his drive for perfectionism in his performances.

Scheepers founded Primal Fear in 1997 with bassist Mat Sinner whom we interviewed last week. For the upcoming tour, fellow founder, Tom Naumann, will return to the fold to handle guitar duties for Magnus Karlsson who will sit this tour out. Scheepers is thrilled to have fans see Naumann on stage with the band again. Karlsson, who has three young children will stay home for some much-needed family time after releasing his own solo album in 2013.

Despite 2013 being a quiet year for Primal Fear, Scheepers kept his throat in fighting form appearing on at least eight different projects including cameos on Karlsson’s solo effort “Free Fall“. He also made appearances on the most recent Pamela Moore album, “Ressurect Me“, and the new Helker album, “Somewhere in the Circle“, which was produced by Mat Sinner.

Scheepers, who once almost got the nod to replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest, continues to hone his four-octave voice. He began his career fronting Tyran Pace and the founding version of fellow power metallers, Gamma Ray. He lists the latter among his Top 5 German metal bands. Get the rest of his picks in the interview in the video box above-left.
