Prima Mosi has rescued thousands of animals

Prima Mosi is the founder of PAWS of Austin (Protection for Animal Welfare Services) a non-profit animal rescue organization. Their purpose is to provide refuge to stray and unwanted companion animals. Great Danes are their expertise. She is also involved in rescue operations during national disasters.

Prima was born with an overwhelming passion to provide animals with respect and care. Her mother did not tolerate animals yet she continued to bring strays home. She would sneak food to these animals hidden in their yard. Her babysitting earnings paid for veterinarian expenses. No matter how much she begged to keep the animals they eventually disappeared.

In order for Prima to fulfill her passion, she relocated across the ocean which was a huge sacrifice. Her parents wanted to see their daughter become a doctor or engineer. They considered those respectable careers due to exorbitant salaries and benefits.

During a visit to the United States, her parents witnessed the enormous pleasure she receives from educating the public, rescuing pets from shelters and hearing about her rescue efforts after a national disaster. They finally accepted the fact that caring for companion animals is her calling in life.

Approximately 1,400 dogs and a few cats have been rescued since she founded PAWS of Austin. The average number of Great Danes rescued each year is around 80 along with 45 other dog breeds. Depending upon the rescue projects, Prima offers 3 to 10 community educational sessions each year to children and adults. She along with members of her organization travel across the country saving and relocating dogs and puppies from puppy mills raids. They have saved 68 in Vermont, 400 in Maine, 800 in Tennessee, 550 in Missouri, and a 1,000 in Texas.

During hurricane Katrina she teamed up with 6 women then traveled to New Orleans to assist with rescue operations. They partnered up with Pasado Safe Haven, a large rescue organization from Seattle, Washington. A temporary shelter housed 60 animals but within a few weeks there were approximately 800 animals rescued from this national disaster. They returned to Austin with 67 dogs and a cat. All of these pets lived in foster homes. After a period of time, 16 dogs were reunited with their families while the rest were adopted.

Prima believes when we work together towards the same goal, we will achieve so much more. During her presentations she states "When animals were in the wild, they took care of themselves. Humans extracted them from their environment and domesticated them. They now depend on us, so it is our duty to continue caring for these animals". She has experienced significant improvements within our communities and for the animals by working together. Her passion and dedication truly inspires individuals within our country.
