Priests for Life expecting decision soon on challenge to Obamacare HHS mandate

The Priests for Life case against the Obamacare HHS mandate on abortion was heard in Washington D.C.’s U.S. District Court on Tuesday.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director, and Janet Morana, Executive Director, were present in the courtroom and stated to the media and to media outlets via email, “We expect a decision in this case very soon, possibly by the end of this week.”

“Whatever the outcome, this much is clear... the government under this administration is trampling upon the rights of the Church. They are trying to tell us what does or does not constitute a burden on our faith. We ask all to pray along with us that the judge will do the right thing.”

In August 2013, the national pro-life ministry, the American Freedom Law Center filed their lawsuit today in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the Obamacare mandate that Priests for Life’s insurance plan must provide contraception, abortifacients and sterilization services to its employees.

The lawsuit challenges the regulations that it violates the Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act by forcing religious organizations to violate their religious beliefs when it comes to abortions and those medical procedures in relation to abortion.

Dr. Alveda King, full-time pastoral associate of Priests for Life and the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is also a plaintiff in this case.

King said, “The Obama administration’s insistence on free contraception is an affront to civil rights.”

“There are racist and eugenic roots to this thinking,” Dr. King said. “Efforts to control the population always target minority and lower-income groups. We will not sit still and allow this to happen.”

With a ruling imminent, Priests for Life’s will be among the first cases to receive a ruling on the merits of the arguments as applied to religious groups.

“The Obama Administration is determined to force employers, including non-profit religious organizations like Priests for Life, and insurers to provide coverage for contraceptive “services” that include abortion-causing drugs in all health insurance plans,” said Fr. Frank Pavone.

“And make no mistake, our lawsuit is critically important and not just for Priests for Life, but for our nation. This stated goal of the Administration is completely contrary to the goal of the Church and of pro-life organizations like Priests for Life,” Pavone said.

“In fact, the HHS mandate is nothing less than an act of tyranny because it compels me, as well you and every other American to violate the demands of conscience. You and I, along with the entire Priests for Life family and all People of Life, are trying to build a culture in which every life is welcomed and protected.”

“The government seeks to force us to do exactly the opposite.”
