In addition to logging the necessary miles over weeks and months of training, one way that runners can achieve success in the Freihofer's Run for Women 5K is to preview the race course. The downtown Albany course, which starts on Madison Avenue in front of the New York State Museum and then winds through Washington Park, is a fairly technical one. As such, runners who are new to the race will benefit from previewing the course, in order to get a feel for what will be await them on race day.
To get the most out of a pre-race course run, download a course map from the Freihofer's Run for Women web site, HERE, and take the map with you for your run. Try to schedule your run for a Saturday at 10 a.m. By running the course at the same time as you will on race day, you will be able to take note of the sunny and shady spots of the course. Pay attention also to where the hills and turns are, and note the water stops.
Understanding the course will increase your race-day confidence because you will know what to expect. It is one run that everyone running the Freihofer's Run for Women should add to their training schedule!
