Preview of the 2014 Amgen Tour of California Stage One: Sacramento

The first stage of the 2014 Amgen Tour of California will be held on Sunday, May 11th starting and ending in front of the California state capitol. The men's race will begin at 10:50 a.m. with a pre-start festival beginning around 9:30 a.m. The teams that will be part of the stage competition are Belkin-Pro Cycling Team (The Netherlands), BMC Racing Team (U.S.A.), Cannondale (Italy), Team Garmin-Sharp (U.S.A.), Team Giant-Shimano (The Netherlands), Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team (Belgium), ORICA GreenEDGE (Australia), Team Sky (Great Britain), Trek Factory Racing (U.S.A.), Team NetAPP-Endura (Germany), Team Novo Nordisk (U.S.A.), UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling (U.S.A.), Bissell Development Team (U.S.A.), Jamis-Hagens Berman p/b Sutter Home (U.S.A.), Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis (U.S.A.), Optum p/b Kelly Benefits Strategies (U.S.A.)

Stage one is 120 miles, the longest of the eight stages and it will start on 9th street between L and N Streets. The race will then head up north through downtown, Richards Blvd, Garden Hwy, 126, up through 117S, right on Riego Road, up Pleasant Grove Road, right on Sunset Blvd, left on Fiddyment Road, right on 193 through Lincoln, right on 49 to Auburn and down Salmon Falls Road into El Dorado Hills, along El Dorado Hills Road, right on White Rock Road through Folsom and continuing on Jackson Road until it turns into L Street and back to loop around the State Capitol.

The women's circuit race will begin around 12:00 P.M. They will compete in time trial racing around the State Capitol. The top twenty finalists will head on to the second stage of the Tour of California and will circuit race around the city of Folsom. This year's race will feature such cyclists as Evelyn Stevens and Carmen Small of Team Specialized-lululemon, UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team's Alison Powers and Mara Abbott, Amber Neben of FCS|Zngine p/b Mr. Restore, DNA Cycling p/b K4’s Tina Pic and Robin Farina of SPY GIANT RIDE p/b MRI racing team.

The winner of the Stage One will also be awarded the yellow jersey (Amgen Race Leader) and will defend it at Stage two which will take place in the city of Folsom. Several other jerseys will be awarded to different riders during the race such as the Visit California Sprint Jersey (bonus points leader), Michelob Ultra King of the Mountain (for the rider with the best time in the elevation stage), Crunchies Best Young Rider Jersey (for the best cyclist born on or after January 1, 1992) and the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer® Most Courageous Rider Jersey (will be awarded daily to the cyclist who best exemplifies the character of those engaged in the fight against cancer).
