Dead Rising has always had a few consistent themes within its structure; time, resources, and crowds of the undead to wade through. With Dead Rising 3 Capcom brought the highest count of zombies, weapon combinations, and costumes players had seen when it originally launched on Xbox One in November of 2013 to generally positive reviews.
Dead Rising as a series has a certain identity crisis within, the story elements portray dire circumstances, loved ones you need to save, and tasks you need to complete to get out of harm’s way. The issue comes when these quite serious and poignant moments are viewed as your character wears a cheerleader skirt or Mega Man outfit. This is always something I’ve had trouble with playing the games in the past, but more often than not, the real reason I put the game down is the sense that I MUST get the game done in the allotted 6 or 7 days, and the repetition in killing so many mindless corpses shambling towards the protagonist.
Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition keeps things interesting. In the time we’ve had to preview the title thus far, it’s apparent that the snags and catches of the mechanics in Dead Rising games of the past have been tweaked to a way that makes the game entertaining. What really keeps us going is the progression; if I just get 2,000 more PP I can unlock another inventory slot, therefore carrying more weapons to combine, and to decimate the poor undead with. I’ve found myself going through the story in order to get a feel for the emotional draw, the characters, and the motivations each of them have. When that gets old, it’s just as easy to craft a new vehicle and tear through a few thousand zombies and blow off some steam. The game still has an identity crisis, but it serves the game incredibly well.
At first, I was a bit put off by some of the characters. Not the main character or supporting cast mind you, as they actually are pretty hefty characters with their own motivations, fears, and personalities. The psychos here and there, are however mildly offensive. After facing a few in differing circumstances I found myself sighing at the caricatures placed in the world. But then something wonderful happened, it just sort of became incredibly indicative of what Dead Rising as a series is. It’s silly, it’s serious, it’s dark, and it’s outrageous. I actually welcomed the next psycho and wanted to see how insane the developers got with each new personality. I found myself laughing at how outlandish some of the enemies were, how overtly stereotypical some were, and just how some of the attacks were disgusting, yet in a strange way, fit.
What I've had with the game so far is a roller coaster of feelings, but once I settled on “oh yeah, it’s a game!” I've begun to really mess with the combinations, weapons, and vehicles in order to see exactly what I can get away with. I’m enjoying the game quite thoroughly, and finding new ways to rack up PP and get to level 50 and beyond.
The zombies are incredibly rendered, with seemingly millions of ways to slice and dice them apart, fascinating detail when you do slice them, and the ability to keep crawling and attacking when the head isn’t destroyed. Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition has proved to be a huge step forward in the fidelity of the series, not only visually, but in an audio sense, as well as narrative. The amount of findings, collectibles, and blueprints scattered around the huge (and I must stress, HUGE) open-world, keeps you invested and makes you want to check out the nooks crannies. You want to get that Frank statue, not just for the bonus PP, but because you know you can get up to that roof and jump across.
Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition also includes all four Untold Stories of Los Perdidos DLC missions, which focus on individual and different protagonists in their struggle to survive and eventually thrive in this wasteland. Full with not only the new characters, but new weapons and vehicles that carry in to the main campaign from the beginning, Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition sure seems to be packed with value from the get go.
Dead Rising 3: Apocalypse Edition releases for PC on September 5 exclusively, and features the familiar co-op modes in addition to the single player adventures described thus far. Look forward to the full Examiner review!
