Studies show that if your mother has or had Alzheimer then you have a bigger risk of getting the disease. If your father has or had the disease it appears you may not be at risk. It is always wise to do what you can to avoid diseases and disorders before they hit you, especially if you know the condition runs in the family.

With Alzheimer it can be a heartbreaking condition that affects the brain. Witnessing a parent digress is very difficult. It will make you want to find ways to avoid this in your future. Treatments for Alzheimer disease include medications and sometimes having to put the loved one in a nursing home.

Studies are continuing to find out what is the cause of Alzheimer disease. It has been linked to exposure to aluminum, vaccinations, diet and other issues. Considering you are what you eat, you need to take thought in your diet and how it affects you. Jack Lalanne, the fitness guru who is 96 years old once stated in an interview that any food you put in your mouth you need to consider how it will affect your body. Considering how “well-kept” this man is you need to heed to his advice. He is still going strong, promoting the Jack Lalanne juicer, doing interviews, sharing fitness tips and motivating people.

Researchers have found high protein diet shrinks the brain. Low-fat diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and fish is a host of epidemiological studies that have suggested that such a diet may delay the onset or slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This connects to another testimony posted online where a man describes the amazing change he saw in his mother-in-law. She is in her 80s, with Alzheimer, going through a live food rehab program and got great results. He and his family were very pleased with the changes they saw in her through a raw diet.

Here are some steps you can take to lower risk factors:

- Work on reducing high blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Prevent or control diabetes, which can lead to cardiovascular disease and then increase risk for dementia.
- Exercise regularly.
- If you are a smoker, quit smoking.
- Follow a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, lots of antioxidants, vitamin C, E, beta-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids.
- One glass of red wine a day is fine if you are a drinker.
- Herbal supplements such as Gingko Biloba, Siberian Ginseng and Gotu Kola are good brain food also.

Very interesting fact about eating raw. Probably a good idea for all of us to increase the amount of raw foods we eat.
