Whether you are playing or working, your knees can take a beating over time. Every time you put additional strain on them, they continue to wear out. The more activity your knees experience, the quicker they begin to break down. There are many ways you can help keep these joints from quitting on you. By practicing any of the following suggestions, you will add several years to your activities.
1. Healthy Diet - Like many other aspects of your life, a healthy diet of foods can help keep your knees from breaking down. Providing your body with natural anti-inflammatory minerals and antioxidants, you can stave off of the damage. Healthier eating is also beneficial as it helps you keep your weight down, which is another strain on your knees every time you get up, walk, or run. These joints are responsible for moving the greater mass of your body. Why not help you help yourself?
2. Extensive Activity - Pushing yourself too hard can be harmful on your knees. Your back isn't the only thing that can be damaged by lifting too much weight or prolonged activity. Use the buddy system when it's time to move objects around the home. Don't forget to take breaks and give yourself time to recuperate before going through the paces. It doesn't make you any less of a person by requesting help or caring for your body's needs.
3. Proper Exercise - Periodically, exercise the areas around your knees in order to provide additional support for your activities. Keeping the muscles between your calves and your hips tone and strong, they prevent the knee from becoming unstable and shifting in directions that are detrimental. The stronger your legs are, the more activity your knees can endure.
4. Going Thermal - Heating the area around your knee can be very therapeutic and get the blood flowing to the joints. Using an ointment or thermal wrap prior to play or work will help in pain relief and help flexibility. Usually, you will want to apply the wrap for approximately 30 minutes or until you feel your knee loosen up. Some gels and creams may not penetrate deep enough in order to get the circulation you need within the muscles, which is why many therapists would rather patients use a thermal wrap.
5. Working Out the Sore - When your activity takes its toll and wears down your joints, your knees will benefit from light activity that doesn't require your joints to support your weight. Swimming, biking, rowing, or even yoga is greatly beneficial and can help ease the tension on your knees. Often times, a workout can lead to your muscles stiffening afterwards. In order to prevent that from happening, you need to ease away from the grueling activity.
Sports athletes are not the only ones that are faced with knee and back problems as the years march on. Depending on how physically active you are, your joints and back could be subject to the same abuse - or even worse if your job requires strenuous activities.
