Preventing childhood obesity from birth

Almost one third of Birmingham is obese.

There has been a rise in the obesity rate in Birmingham in 2011 versus 2010.

A practical obesity prevention method was presented at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting in Dallas, Texas on February 11, 2012, that eliminates maternal influence on a child developing obesity and the diseases that obesity causes.

The researchers found that short therapy with the anti-diabetic medication Pioglitazone prevented the transfer of any tendency toward obesity in children of obese mouse mothers. The treatment lasted ten to twelve weeks and produced a life time of prevention of the enzymatic and biological activities that promote obesity.

The scientists show that obesity related body programming during pregnancy can be reversed by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors.

This study "Pioglitazone Therapy in Offspring Exposed to Maternal Obesity" is the first of its kind and offers a great deal of hope to regulating and preventing obesity in the chidden of obese mothers.

Potentially all one has to do is give the children the drug to prevent an ever increasing new generation of epedemically obese people.
