Prevent flu and illness during any kind of travel

Because of the impact that illness can have on our travels, I am going to get right to the point.

First we had the fear of Avian Flu, also known as "Bird Flu". Now we are faced with a possible epedemic of Swine flu." Many people are left asking, is it safe to travel? The truth is, I don't have an answer for this question. I only have my opinion. And though I will keep my over rated opinion to myself, I will do my best to help ensure that you are informed and have the resources that will help to ensure that you stay as safe and healthy as possible while traveling.

The first thing you need to know about illness and outbreaks whether traveling to a near by town or traveling over seas, is where the illnees appears to be prevalent. Maybe you aren't traveling but are still concerned. http://www.pandemicflu.gov/ Has the answers you need, and the site is continually updated throughout the day in real time. Information on any and all flus, illnesses and diseases are reported and are tracked along with a comprehensive guide on prevention and symptoms, statistics for how many cases have been confirmed, and up to date information about contracted ilnesses and the investigations following the outbreak.

Currently while composing this article, the following advisory is in effect: Acting HHS Secretary declares a Public Health Emergency nationwide involving Swine Influenza A. As a consequence of confirmed cases of Swine Influenza A (swH1N1) in California, Texas, Kansas, and New York, on this date and after consultation with public health officials as necessary, I, Charles E. Johnson, Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, pursuant to the authority vested in me under section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, 42 U.S.C. § 247d, do hereby determine that a public health emergency exists nationwide involving Swine Influenza A that affects or has significant potential to affect national security. Click here  to see this information.

If you can not avoid traveling to areas that might be affected by any and all illnesses, be proactive in prevention. Whether flying or driving, include the following things to bring along with you during your journey.

  • Hand sanitizer- use often- especially after handling money, ATM machines, shopping cart handles, public restrooms or any public restaurants and seating areas
  • Tissues- keep one in your pocket, should you sneeze have it handy and ready at your finger tips instead of having to go through your bags to find one after it has already happened. It can also be used (assuming it has remained clean) to cover your mouth when you are around others who are without a mask and have a cough and/or appear to be ill.
  • Coughing- Do not cover your mouth with your hands! After you cough, the next thing you do is reach out and touch something and it effectively can and will spread your germs. Instead, bend your arm and cough into your inner elbow onto your sleeve, this eliminates the hand to object contact which would have your cough and unintentional bacterial or viral containing saliva mist.
  • See a doctor- If you suspect  that you have become ill, do not wait to recieve a diagnosis or treatment. It is true that though some common flu, avian flu, and swine flu can become fatal, the best way to beat the illness is to seek prompt treatment. Let your primary care physician know that you will be traveling, where you intend to travel to, and make a plan to recieve treatment in the event that you become ill. More than 35% of business travelers said they or a colleague have become seriously sick or injured while away from home.
  • Protect your investment- Buy travel insurance and cover your non refundable tickets should you decide to change your mind based on possible illness, and buy extra medical coverage if you plan to travel over seas.
