Obesity is a serious health problem. MayoClinic.com writes that obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern. Obesity increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Obesity happens when you eat and drink more calories than you burn through exercise and normal daily activities. Obese people generally experience a lower overall quality of life and often must deal with discrimination. People in Syracuse are concerned that efforts to fight obesity have not been aggressive enough as seen with a continued high prevalence of obesity over the years.
It has been reported in Nutrition Horizon "Prevalence of Obesity in US Still High, with Little Change in Recent Years." Data from 2009-2010 indicate that there has not been significant change in the prevalence of obesity in the U.S., with about one in three adults and one in six children and teens obese. In this stiudy by Katherine M. Flegal, Ph.D., Cynthia L. Ogden, Ph.D., M.R.P., and colleagues with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention obesity was defined as a body mass index [BMI] of 30 or greater. Rates of obesity were compared with data for 5,926 adult men and women from a nationally representative sample of the U.S. population in 2009-2010 and for 22,847 men and women in 1999-2008.
It was found in 2009-2010, the age-adjusted average BMI was 28.7 for men and women. It was also found by the researchers that overall, the age-adjusted obesity prevalence was 35.7 percent. Among the men, the prevalence was 35.5 percent. For women, the prevalence of obesity was found to be 35.8 percent. The study also showed that the age-adjusted prevalence of overweight and obesity combined, BMI 25 or greater, was 68.8 percent overall, 73.9 percent among men, and 63.7 percent among women. The researchers wrote "Obesity prevalence shows little change over the past 12 years, although the data are consistent with the possibility of slight increases."
