After Mrs. DiLaurentis’ body was found buried alive last week, “Pretty Little Liars” started out with Ali mourning the loss and getting ready for the funeral tonight, June 24. As Ali got dressed, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily waited in the living room. Ali came downstairs wearing one of her mother’s dresses, and her dad ordered her to change. Ali didn’t understand, so Spencer explained her mom wore that dress to Ali’s funeral.
The girls returned to school and met with the principal before trying to figure out who killed Mrs. DiLaurentis. Spencer was adamant it hadn’t been Jason, but the others were certain he had. Mona approached Aria and asked her to sign Ezra’s get well card. She mentioned he was back recuperating in Rosewood, which Aria didn’t know. Paige and Emily had an awkward run-in, and Emily confronted a new girl staring at her. (It turned out she just wanted Emily to help her improve her swimming).
Spencer watched the DiLaurentis’ house from her bedroom, and Melissa walked in. Spencer told Melissa Toby had gone after her on his own. Melissa warned Spencer to stay away from the DiLaurentises.
Hanna took Ali to the funeral home to pick something up. As Spencer and her father looked out at their backyard, Mr. Hastings asked how Spencer felt about selling the house. Spencer told her dad Melissa suspected Jason of murdering his mother and asked him to stop her. Aria went to see Ezra, who apologized for coming back but explained he had nowhere else to go. He warned her to watch out for Shauna, not knowing all the details of what happened.
Aria delivered Ezra’s manuscript to Ali, who tried to tell her Shauna would have killed Ezra or all of them if she hadn’t stopped her. Aria still wasn’t convinced. Emily and Hanna returned to Pittsburgh to talk to the creepy man they once lied to about subletting an apartment. The conversation wasn’t shown, but he must have cleared Jason by providing an alibi – in the car, they discussed who else may have killed Mrs. DiLaurentis.
Spencer went to see Jason, who was packing up. He couldn’t stay there anymore and didn’t feel he was needed. Spencer showed him the e-mail his mom never sent, which read “I can’t protect you anymore.” Jason talked her through and helped her to realize Ali’s mom never sent the e-mail because she went to talk to the person face-to-face. Spencer thought that person was possibly the one who killed Mrs. DiLaurentis.
Ali returned Ezra’s manuscript and told him there was more he hadn’t written about. Hanna and Emily stopped at the coffee shop, and Hanna confronted Mona. She accused her of changing her into Ali, but Mona only snidely remarked that no one remembered the old Hanna. Spencer shared her theory with Aria, and they talked about Aria’s visit to Ezra and her feelings about killing Shauna.
Mr. Hastings ran into Ali and said he was surprised to see her alone. She explained she couldn’t stay in her room forever, and he suggested he give her a ride home. Paige was waiting for Emily when she got back home. Paige told Emily she loved her and tried to make amends, but Emily only told her she deserved the best of everything.
Back home, Spencer showed her dad the e-mail. Melissa interrupted and read the e-mail before ripping it up. Melissa suggested they “tell her,” but her dad said not to and ordered Spencer to go upstairs. When she protested, he told her she couldn’t lie when she didn’t know anything about it. Aria went to see Ezra again and apologized for Ali coming over. She confessed to killing Shauna. Ezra stood up and asked if there was anything he could do to help.
