Promoter Carlos Mena of Prestige Fights and POWER MMA and Nola Xtreme Fitness Owner Gino Ascani are teaming up to bring Prestige Fights 5: Bayou Brawl to the Metropolitan on November 12th, 2011 in downtown New Orleans. The two premier MMA gyms in the City of New Orleans, representing the East and West Bank respectively have signed up some of the region's best fighters to appear on the card including Jonathan Mackles, Gabe Wood, David King, Noor Hindi, Matt Frost, Rico Bozant, Jeremy Bufkin, Blake Dufour, and many more to be appear on the show. The promotion has 12 fights planned for the evening.
But matchmaker Mitchell Klein (in cooperation with NOLA XTREME's Shawn Guyton for this event) says that one key match which will have everyone on the edge of their seats will be between former World kickboxing champion William Knorr and long accomplished professional boxer Martin Verdin, both seasoned veterans of the sport with large fan bases. Knorr, a long time coach at POWER MMA has not fought in more than a decade; however, he regularly spars every comer during his practice sessons. Verdin defeated former Domick Carter, a world champion boxer a year ago at the Sugar Mill in an event also promoted by Mena proving that he is dangerous. The fight is set for a catchweight of 200 pounds. In the coming days the entire card will be announced and the MMA examiner will be bring fans around the region all of the details. Knorr says he is in the best shape of his life, having lost nearly thirty pounds in preparation for the fight.
The metropolitan, also known as Generations Hall is one of the most successful night clubs in downtown New Orleans and has not hosted a fight for more than a year. Organizers are hoping to make the joint venture a quarterly event. Sponsors include the VIP school bus, Gibby Andry, Masquerade/Harrahs, and many others.
