President Barack Obama spoke in front of a crowd in his old neighborhood in Chicago. According to the Telegraph, on February 16, 2013, he addressed how family dynamics can impact gun control.
During the speech he spoke clearly on his feelings of family and how important parents are in teaching children about guns and other life lessons. President Obama stated,
"There's no more important ingredient for success, nothing that would be more important for us in reducing violence than strong, stable families."
We further stated how his own father's absence in his young life, affected him.
"You know, don't get me wrong, as the son of a single mom who gave everything she had to raise me with the help of grandparents I turned out OK. But at the same time, I wish I had had a father who was around and involved. Loving, supportive parents, and by the way, that's all kinds of parents."
President Obama suggested that although he may institute harsher gun control laws and requirements it will only work if the men in the community act like role models for our youth. Then rightfully adding that all parents are responsible for being respectable role models, he added,
"That includes foster parents, and that includes grandparents, extended families. It includes gay or straight parents. Those parents supporting kids, that's the single most important thing."
According to Huffington Post in January of 2013, 12 people in Chicago had been killed by a gun within the first 8 days of the year. This sets the pace for a much higher gun violence rate than 2012.
