President Barack Obama has had a busy year. From dealing to terrorism, war, The Affordable Care Act or many other issues, Obama gets few moments of downtime which he sometimes fills with award-winning television shows. Obama tends to watch darker television dramas which include topics he deal with on a daily basis as the leader of the free world. President Obama has stated in the past that "The Wire" was one of his all time favorite television shows. However, the entire Obama family usually watches more light hearted television comedies and period shows.

The AMC drama "Breaking Bad" finally came to an end last summer with the final eight episodes of season five. Actor Bryan Cranston plays Walter White, is a high school chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin, and Obama has mentioned that although he watches the show he is still on the early seasons and it's difficult to avoid spoilers. Another AMC drama the POTUS watches is "Mad Men," and the character of Peggy Olson reminds him of what is was like "for his grandmother in a world dominated by men."

Another favorite is the Showtime drama "Homeland," which deals with realistic threats against the United States and it's citizens. Many of the issues on the series have also made headlines during Obama's administration. Another political drama on the list includes the Netflix original series "House of Cards," which follows a senator who uses power and influence to attempt to gain the vice presidential nomination.

He is also drawn to period television shows, like HBO's "Game of Thrones," about medieval wars for territory with lots of violence, and is known for it's controversial moments and character deaths. The gangster drama "Boardwalk Empire" is on the list as well, which follows people in Atlantic City during the Prohibition era. The PBS drama "Downton Abbey" also makes the list, with the Crawley family being with tragedy and change at the turn of the twentieth century.

As the family, the Obama's are more likely to watch comedy show like "Modern Family," which is a favorite of Michelle, Sasha and Malia. Another series the family has raved about is "Parks and Recreation," and several of its actors have met the President.
