In a move that has outraged animal activists worldwide, including celebrities Sophia Bush, Elissa Sursara and animal organisation PETA, President Barack Obama has reopened the trade in horse meat after finding government funding to uphold a questionable "inspection" law within slaughter houses.
According to Ecorazzi, The House of Representatives and the United States Senate approved the Conference Committee report on spending bill H2112, which funds the United States Department of Agriculture, on November 18. Before the Thanksgiving holiday, President Obama signed this law allowing Americans to kill and eat horses.
Despite 70% of Americans voting against the horse slaughter, Obama has signed off on the bill that will see more than 200,000 horses exported and killed for meat per year.
