President Obama on his Christian faith and prayer

Today at the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton, President Obama spoke of his Christian faith.  Obama and his family are of course aware that many Americans persist in thinking that he is Muslim.  While his family has not found a regular church home in the D.C. area yet, the President said that the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David gave his family spiritual nourishment.

Obama gave a testimony about his coming to faith.  His family was not religious, but Obama was impressed at the spirituality of the Civil Rights leaders.  He then became an organizer for a group of churches in Chicago, and eventually he “came to know Jesus Christ for myself and embrace him as my Lord and Savior.”  This was about 20 years ago, and he added that the past two years as President have deepened his faith.

Regarding his prayer life and his presidency, Obama said, “When I wake in the morning, I wait on the Lord, and I ask him to give me the strength to do right by our country and its people.  And when I go to bed at night, I wait on the Lord, and I ask him to forgive me my sins and look after my family and the American people and make me an instrument of his will.”  He continued that he and wife, Michelle, “are reminded that ultimately what matters is not what other people say about us, but whether we’re being true to our conscience and true to our God. ‘Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you, as well.’”  He thanked all those who are praying for them.

Why do I find the President's remarks so hard to believe and accept??!!

  • Whocares 1 year ago

You find his remarks hard to believe, because you have a story you believe in more ? You have a choice...you can believe what someone specifically tells you, or the voices of others that do not have first hand knowledge. Why do we believe in flying saucers and the story that aliens built the pyramids ? Why do we not believe in the single bullet theory ? Why are we suspect of anyone, specifically an educated, well spoken black man ? Probably because those believing these things and questioning this man come from a unhappy, uneducated white men....who can't accept the world no longer revolves around his predjudices....

Because Obama still supports killing unborn children? Because he also denies the exclusivity of Christ?

    USA -
    grow up.

Accept the fact that christianity is a belief held by a minority of the planet.
Accept the fact that your country is not a holy bastion of your book, but is necessarily religiously diverse.
Accept the fact that your objections to any purported lack of faith on his behalf, is simply because you want to impose your religion on everyone else, and are terrified of the fact that your religion will founder.

It IS foundering. Deal with it. and it has nothing at all to do with your predjudice, it has everything to do with more people having more access to more information, and no longer being terrified of a myth about a murderous hypocritical god

The church in Chicago obama attended for 20 years was led by the biggest racist, after the country found out all about obamas pastor, obama ditched him quick, after 20 years.

Only God knows Obama's heart and only God is able to righteously judge him. We, as a nation, should always keep our leaders in our prayers, no matter who they say they believe in. The prayers of believers are stronger than any human. For our battle is not against flesh and blood.

  • Noname 1 year ago

Good for you. It proves that he is definitely NOT a muslim!

What's wrong is that we live in a country where atheists are scoffed and scolded. There's nothing wrong with moral atheism. Just because I don't believe in a God doesn't mean I live an immoral lifestyle. President Obama is probably even more moral than I am. It's obvious that he's an atheist, but why does someone need God to run a country?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Good for him, and God bless. Its a shame so many people are judging and doubting....not very Christian of them.

Anonymous (you who wrote: "Obama is not an American or a Christian"): you're only damaging yourself by clinging to angry untruths. Beating a dead horse is bad for your health.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I continue to be amazed at the pressure placed on elected officials to express their religious beliefs, as though that had anything to do with their ability to be leaders of this country. Woe betide anyone who runs for office and declares neutrality on religiosity.

Actions will always speak louder than words. I don't believe Obama is truthful. He really should provide evidence of eligibility instead of having his records closed.

  • Victoria Priest 1 year ago

It would be interesting if you posted about the eligibility issue more.

President Obama is not a muslim nor athesist. I honor and accept his and his family's Christian faith of which I espouse. Why can't the nay sayers accept what he says? Obviously, some will discredit anything he says. This country needs all the help it can get from the one and only God who sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from eternal death.

Only a christian would believe such horse dirt! Then again this country has lost it's sane people and look how many people voted for hope and change. Played right into the globalist elitist brand that is taking over. Why do you think we don't have any industry here? It's all been sold with the master plan to make us broke. Once there is no more USA it's all just peasants they already have control of.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

If you read your Bible you'll see it takes more to be a Christian than "accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior." So, that being said our President has not obeyed "the gospel", but he is our leader and the Bible is very specific about us praying for them and being submissive to them. God causes nations to rise and fall and He has a purpose for all leaders, Christian or not.

  • Victoria Priest 1 year ago

Yes, I agree with what you say, on the face of it. What fruit is born will tell much, but still, we cannot judge who will be saved in the end. I think he could have chosen other words to say about his faith and Jesus, if he were not being sincere, but who knows. We are to pray for our leaders, yes, and this would be wise to do in any case.

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”

    Acts 16

  • Chuck Woodard 1 year ago

I'm not sure this is the best place to be discussing theology because then we're going to get atheists in the discussion and it's really just disruptive. Yes, 'believe' is what the jailer was told to do. But, what do we see involved in his belief. Would we say someone can be saved without repentance? No, because that's the change we have to make and there are plenty of Scriptures teling us salvation comes by repentance. Well, he washed his wounds, which is an act of repentance. What else does he do? He's baptized. Then he and his household rejoice, having believed. Belief here is "a part for the whole" (synecdoche). They did a lot more than just mentally acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior before they would rejoice. Belief, repentance and baptism are all involved. (Acts 2:38, 1 Peter 3:21; Galatians 3:26-27). We can discuss this more if you'd like.

It's funny how majority of these posts are anonymous. Everyone has their own beliefs. Obama is the President right now and all we can do as a country is hope and pray that he is doing the best he can. No one really knows what he deals with on a daily basis so talk all you want about what you would do different and what he is doing wrong. Obviously, you can't do anything; that's why you are speaking anonymously. May God bless him and his family and his position of power.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Prayer never solved a single problem in this world. Obama prays for guidance and that god should solve his problem or give him guidance. Get up off your knees Barack and get busy fixing this nation. Praying for a solution only wears out the knees of your pants.

  • Agnos1 1 year ago

I'd like to point out that if Obama was so religious, then why is his faith so absent in his own memoirs? He speaks much of ethics, but not that the idea of ethics or his own sense of right and wrong came from special supernatural commandments. I've always thought he was Atheist. Again, why haven't they found a suitable church by now? I'd have to remind him there is no Atheist church. We have no mandatory meetings or particular doctrine to follow. Quite possibly this "turnaround" is politically inclined, so I'm somewhat disappointed in his stance now. There are many powerful voices of truth other than Martin Luther King he could draw from- Robert Ingersoll, and Mark Twain are just a couple who come to mind:

"Faith is something you have when you know it ain't true."- Mark Twain

Sure he's "Christian". A Black Liberation Theology Christian. go on now, Wiki it. It's based in Liberation Theology, which is a Social Justice movement. (ahem-Marxism)

Obama is the christian that most of America is. god is their health, their job title, their money, their sexual perversion, their lying, stealing, so yes, he certainly could be a christian. But he is not a Deciple of Jesus, a follower. he is a good muslim also becasue he knows how to lie and deceive. say what they want to hear knowing you are purposefully deceiving. "islam is a religion of peace, don't disagree or i will kill you" and Honor Killings are good for the faith... really it is a very peaceful religion. So yes, Obama is all the bad and none of the good about religion.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

    whats wrong with marxism?

  • New Yorker 1 year ago

I would like to believe him. I just wonder why he has such a hard time saying "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights" He always omits the Creator part.

  • Victoria Priest 1 year ago

@TXM. Yes, all who believe in the Lord Jesus truthfully in their hearts will be saved. However, the bible does also speak of false prophets, false believers, and apostates. This is where discernment comes into play, though we cannot judge for sure who is saved or will be saved in the end.

  • Tiredofyoursuperstitions 1 year ago

I would prefer an Atheist president or, at a minimum, a president who is neutral on religion and doesn't flout his/her personal beliefs on supernatural issues.

  • Andy 1 year ago

What kind of Christian is Obama? He is not a Catholic Christian like Joe Biden claims to be, but Joe advocates abortion so his alignment with Church theology is questionable. Obama isn't a Baptist Christian like Mike Huckleberry or a Methodist Christian like Hillary. Mormons aren't Christian (sorry Mittens) and he doesn't seem to be a Christian like Sarah Palin. Obama seems to have publicly distanced himself from the Black Liberation theology of Rev Wright he semi-listened too over 20 years so askijng what kind of Christian Obama is as reasonable as asking to see the bona fides of his nativity story. The document embargo on that hasn't been lifted so I doubt we wil get to know what kind of Christan Obama is.

  • Andy 1 year ago

    Hi Vickie,
I know what a modern Christian is. One that broadens the definition to include themself even if- especially if it doesn't fit the traditional definition. You can cal lit tribal if you like but it doesn't change the facts of the Bible. I suggest you either take it for what it is and says or reject it all.

  • Victoria Priest 1 year ago

Wow, one of the most stereotypical and bigoted comments I've seen, and I've seen a lot. I doubt if you even know what evangelical means in terms of modern Christians. Anyhow, I came to believe in Christ myself, without "tribal leaders," lol. I guess all tribal people in the world are to be sneered at as stupid, too.

  • Just a Person 1 year ago

Hi, Vicki. I'm someone most people would consider an atheist (although I don't consider myself that at all). I just stumbled on your article and I decided to read it because I was so strongly moved by President's Obama's words at the Tucson memorial. From what I know of Christianity, those words were a beautiful evocation of the Christian -- and human -- spirit. I found your post heartwarming and uplifting and I thank you.

Sanders, maybe you shouldn't be throwing verbal stones here. To me, your words only expose your own deeply embedded assumptions and non-reason.

    Anyway, thanks Vicki

this comment is unfair Mr. Kaufman and taers down a "straw man." Nobody has any issue believing that a black man (or a mulato) can be a Christian.

Your remarks about others beliefs are arguably uncharitable and blasphemous. How intolerant ;-)

  • Ensoh 1 year ago

After the Crusades were over in the Middle East, there was another crusade, known as the Albigensian Crusade, in Europe. In that one, Christians of one perspective who couldn't tolerate the Christian perspective of others killed thousands of the faithful within their own religion. It was all very official, and of course they called their victims anything but "Real Christians," but when the army came to one village, a commander was asked how they could tell the "Real" Christians from the "Fake" ones. The commander replied, "Kill them all: God will sort them out." Many of the comments on this board remind me of that heyday of Christian bigotry.

Our country has always been blessed.I hope and pray that our president looks to God for his big decisions. If he does this country will continue to see god beauty and blessings and if not this country gonna see the end times that it talks about in the Bible. I hope this country seeks Gods ways and turns from their evil ways. I will continue to pray for our president.

  • tos100 1 year ago

This is supposed to be a nation that offers freedom of (and from) religion.

If Obama wants to believe in an invisible man that helps him out, I guess that's his problem. But should it interfere with the management of the country, then we're going to have a problem.

W should not be having a "national prayer breakfast." Do you know how many Americans that excludes? America is full of a variety of different religions. There are over 38,000 different brands of Christianity available for purchase in America alone.

For the Christians who are all about public prayer, might I remind you that you're supposed to be praying privately in a closet (Matthew 6:5-7).

It's a shame that an Atheist has to remind you of that passage.

I read another article today about how Obama is praying for the people of Egypt. That's nice and all, but the people of Egypt need ACTUAL HELP, not prayers. That's like wishing something would change. Mr. President Obama, you cannot get change by praying for it. You actually have to DO something.

But he won't. Mubarak tortures people on behalf of the US. Is that the Christian way?

Vicki, I linked to you in a footnote of my most recent article:

    http://www.examiner.com/christian-perspectives-in-philadelphia/who-is-je...

You have inspired me to take on some more theological issues and to "argue" for the truth of God and His Word.

I was hoping to find an email for you, but I didn't.

Feel free to delete this once you read it.

Hey Stephen, thanks so much! Praise God if I can do some good for Him and others. I wondered about the email - I have the command in to allow others to be able to contact me by email, but apparently that is one of those new things not worked out/fixed yet. I have a board that I'm at about everyday, if you want to go there with any questions or whatever. Anyone who sees this: all are welcome who seek to have fun and have serious but civil discussions. Unfriendly and uncivil posts will result in banning. http://withchristianeyes.yuku.com/directory

In God we trust, God bless America, Laus Deo (“Praise be to God” inscribed atop the Washington Monument, One nation under God, The Ten Commandments inscribed in the Supreme Court building, Government Office Oath Takings sworn over the bible and every single president that we ever had was Christian. Scripture is the basis of our constitution, Christianity was the religion of the founders of the republic, and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants. Yes, we are the greatest country on earth and we are Christian by identity to the whole world. The profound statement of President Obama about getting his strength from his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is deeply rooted in his being and we as a people hearing this from our leader, put there by God himself, should start to reflect on our own spiritual identity which truly is the source of strength in every ones’ life.

  • Scott B. 1 year ago

"truly is the source of strength in every ones’ life." Not in my life and I resent your implication. Man created god and wrote the scriptures you refer to. Jesus was probably real, but a mortal human being, and probably the best salesman in the history of the world. You want something to pray to? Pray to gravity. This single force created our sun, the planets, brought water to the earth where life created and man evolved from the primordial soup. Pray to gravity, at least it's real, but don't expect anymore problems solved by it then an imaginary god.
