In this Aug. 11, 2009 file photo, President Barack Obama speaks at town hall meeting about health care, at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, N.H. There's a certain irony in what's taking place across the country this summer. A president who was a 20th Century community organizer and who used 21st Century tools for his successful people-powered political movement now finds himself under fire from citizens airing their grievances at 19th Century-inspired town hall style meetings. Today at 2:55 p.m. ET, President Obama will be live from Montana, holding another town hall meeting. Will there be yelling? Is anyone going to stand up and shout, hold picket signs of President Obama wearing Nazi garb as is common with other town halls? I doubt it, but Democrat officials in Bozeman, Montana aren’t taking chances. Would we like to see tempers flare, veins bulging from necks as protesters and supporters battle it out on live TV? Sure we would, it would make for great YouTube fare and would boost network ratings nationwide. And to add fuel to the fire, those who have an acquired taste for tea should be delighted to know that tea baggers and birthers have been recruited to make this their most high profile protest yet, according to reports.
President Obama held a previous town hall meeting this week in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and it was extremely tame for what has been occurring in other meetings across the country. No arrests, no dissenters, no pushing, shoving, or screaming, and yes one person had a gun, but it was legal and he sat through the town hall meeting without any interruptions. Other town hall meetings see people escorted out by police for holding up signs. How tame will today’s town hall meeting be? No one knows for sure, but there is an inclination he’ll take tougher questions than he did on Tuesday. Whether or not he’ll take questions from tea baggers and birthers, however, remains to be seen.
In preparation for the possibility of hundreds to thousands of protesters, tea baggers, and birthers crashing President Obama’s town hall, the Montana Democratic Party encouraged supporters to attend. The website, Organizing for America, has issued the call for supporters to come out and show their care for President Obama and health care reform. They are meeting: Friday, August 14 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
At the NE corner of Airport and Frontage Roads (Belgrade, MT)
Airport Rd. & Frontage Rd.
Belgrade, MT 59714
How wild the town hall will get is anyone’s guess. What goes on outside the meeting is sure to be worthy of several hundred thousand You Tube hits. Tickets were distributed on a first come, first serve basis yesterday. Rules for the event, as obtained from the Montana Democratic Party website are as follows:
For security reasons, do not bring bags and limit personal items. No signs or banners permitted. All attendees will go through airport-like security. Due to limited space at the event the White House will only be able to fulfill a limited number of requests for tickets. Tickets are not for sale or re-sale.
