President Obama and Clint Eastwood urge the Supreme Court to support gay marrige

President Barack Obama is putting his hat into the ring over a Supreme Court case involving California's ban on gay marriage.

According to NBC News, the Obama administration will urge the U.S. Supreme Court to support same-sex marriage in California. In 2008, California voters voted in favor of proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in the state and nullified over 18,000 same-sex marriage licenses. The law is now in the Supreme Court, which will rule sometime in April if the law is constitutional.

The Obama administration was originally not going to get involved over the case against proposition 8, and even when he announced that he supported gay marriage in 2012, he re-affirmed his position that the federal government was not going to get involved over the court case of proposition 8.

But times have changed.

Obama was far bolder in his stance on gay marriage in his inaugural address. He said in his speech:

Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.

The Obama administration will file a friend-of-the-court brief on Feb. 28 in the support of the two gay couples who lunched the fight against proposition 8 in 2009. The 28th is also the last day to file briefs in support of the couples. Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood also signed the brief in support of the couples and urged the court to support gay marriage.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments starting in late March and will be expected to have a final ruling on the case in mid-April.

Stay tuned.
