He may be the most powerful man in the world, but he is also the father of two daughters, and as such, U.S. President Barack Obama will have to experience their coming of age. On Valentine's Day, Thursday, he hinted that one of his daughters, probably the eldest, 14-year-old Malia, is officially dating.
I do have to warn the parents who are here, who still have young kids, they grow up to be, like five feet 10 inches. And even if they're still nice to you, they basically don't have a lot of time for you during the weekends. They have sleepovers and dates. So all that early investment just leaves them to go away.
Although Obama could still be discussing the younger of his two daughters, Sasha, who is 11, the reference to height is a solid clue. He alluded to a child growing to be 5'10" in height, and news reports have indicated that Malia is about that tall.
It's unclear, though, if Malia is actually dating, or if the thought of her growing up, and eventually dating, is weighing on the mind of the POTUS. Everything Obama mentioned is a thought that enters the minds of parents as their children grow up -- not wanting to associate with their parents any longer, having dates, and eventually leaving.
Malia Obama was born on July 4, 1998, which means she will turn 15 this Independence Day. Natasha (more often known as Sasha) was born on June 10, 2001. They were both delivered by their parents' friend Dr. Anita Blanchard at University of Chicago Medical Center. Sasha is the youngest child to reside in the White House since John F. Kennedy, Jr. arrived as an infant in 1961.
Obama made his comments during a visit to Decatur, Ga., to discuss his plan for universal access to preschool education. However, he didn't linger long, as he had to get back for his Valentine's Day celebration with the FLOTUS. He said,
I can't imagine a more romantic way to spend Valentine's Day than with all of you, with all the press here. Actually, Michelle says hello. She made me promise to get back in time for our date tonight. That's important.
I've already got a gift, got the flowers. I was telling folks, the flowers are a little easier, though, because I got this rose garden. A lot of people, you know, keeping flowers around.
