Preserving Place wins Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest

Judges have crowned Preserving Place’s own Sweet Onion Confit as a winner in the 2014 University of Georgia Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest. The customer favorite beat out two other finalists in the condiments category, and was the only winner from Atlanta.

On Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18, judges critiqued each entry on commercial appeal, use of local Georgia ingredients, Georgia theme, taste, innovation and potential market volume in each category. The concoction of sweet onions, brown sugar, vinegar and crunchy mustard seeds was crafted by chef and cookbook author Virginia Willis.

The Flavor of Georgia food product contest is sponsored by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development in partnership with the Center of Innovation for Agribusiness, Office of Gov. Nathan Deal, Walton EMC, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Agribusiness Council and the UGA Department of Food Science and Technology. Preserving Place is located in Westside Provisions District. Founded by Martha McMillin, Preserving Place draws inspiration from South Carolina Piedmont heritage and the refined architecture of Charleston. With fond memories of growing up on a farm that produced cotton and peaches, McMillin is excited to share her knowledge of preserving foods and canning that was passed down from generation to generation. Working with Virginia Willis on signature recipe development, Preserving Place features house-made products such as ATL-1 Steak Sauce, Sweet Onion Confit, Veracruz Seafood Sauce, Catsup +, Hot Peach & Ginger Jam, Watermelon Rind Pickles, and Bread & Butter Pickle Relish.

Preserving Place is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. Preserving Place is located at 1170 Howell Mill Road, Suite P10b adjacent to Steven Alan.
