The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is organizing a prescription drug drop-off on September 16, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hithergreen Senior Center - 5900 Hithergreen Dr, Washington Township. The Hithergreen Center is approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Dayton, Ohio near Centerville.
The program allows residents to safely drop off unwanted or expired drugs for proper disposal. Just about every household has some type of over-the-counter or prescription medication in their medicine that is either expired, or no longer needed for the original reason it was acquired.
Residents face many options when getting rid of medications, but none of them are very safe or efficient. The resident could simply leave the medicine where it is at. This could increase the possibility that a family member or visitor could find the medication and use it for their own purposes. Additionally, a resident could be tempted to use the medication if similar symptoms or medication conditions arise again. Both of these scenarios are quite dangerous. Additionally, if the medication is expired, it might not be as effective as it should be and the desired results would not be achieved.
Another option is to simply flush the medication down the toilet. This seems like the most logical solution, however, it can cause serious problems in the long run. Most medications do not degrade easily, so even if a medication is flushed, it will remain active for a very long time, even through the purification process at the water-treatment facility. This medication will then be returned to the water supply where it could contaminate ground water or lakes & streams. If allowed to enter lakes and streams, it could cause unhealthy conditions for local wildlife and fish.
The other option is to throw the medication in the trash and allow the sanitation worker to remove it. This medication then ends up in landfills where it, once again, could permeate ground water. Similar to other synthetic materials, such as plastic water bottles, medication can remain in its original composition for several decades, if not longer.
The purpose of the sheriff's office program is to simply remove unwanted and potentially dangerous medication from home medicine cabinets and disposing of it in a safe, proper and environmentally friendly manner. The service is free, simply take your medications to the Hithergreen Center and staff will assist you in placing them in the proper container.
