A Preparedness Fair teaching basics of physical and financial readiness was held Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1521 Hillcrest Dr. in Montrose. Three different workshops addressed the topics of how to begin a food storage program, how to store fuel, water and medical supplies, and how to be financially prepared. A fourth presentation briefly covered storing and protecting important family records and documents. Attendees received handouts listing local and regional sources of bulk foods and other survival commodities as well as helpful websites.
The Fair is planned to be the first in a series of presentations that will discuss various facets of emergency preparedness, including how to cook with food storage basics, how to put together a 72-hour evacuation kit, and how to do basic first aid. Community resources and local preparedness experts will be featured in future events. The sessions are open to the public and will be announced in advance.
The City of Montrose has asked that all local residents take emergency preparedness seriously, in order to be able to help themselves and others, and has a page devoted to the subject on their website. The Wal-Mart stores in both Delta and Montrose are beginning to carry preparedness supplies, including 50-gallon drums for water storage.
