Prep Basketball: Winterset hands Newton its first loss

The Winterset Huskies handed Newton's girls basketball team its first loss of the season Tuesday as Shelby Messerschmitt scored 12 points and had three steals in the 51-30 win in Winterset.

Taylor Benshoof added 10 points and four rebounds, while Ali Mortoza had 10 rebounds.

Winterset made 19-of-47 shots from the field.

Collins-Maxwell-Baxter 41, Madrid 30

Emmeline Huffaker scored 14 points, pulled down six rebounds and had seven steals as the Raiders won their first game of the season over the Tigers.

Abbie Haupert, a freshman, added nine points and eight rebounds, while senior Amber Joyce also collected seven points. CMB turned it over just 15 times in the win.

Earlham 47, Iowa Christian Academy 35

Tess Ory had 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three assists as the Cardinals defeated Iowa Christian Academy on Tuesday night.

Abbey Murphy pitched in six points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Van Meter 47, Saydel 26

Aspen Rhodes led the Bulldogs with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.

Jenna McAfee also had 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Kaytlyn Ernst added 11 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Van Meter had 48 rebounds in the game and got 24 steals on defense.

Dallas Center-Grimes 55, Des Moines Christian 25

Ashton Yossi had 10 points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals to lead the Fillies to another win.

No one else scored in double figures for unbeaten DC-G (3-0) but 12 players scored for the Fillies.
