For 25 years Premio Lo Nuestro has been recognizing excellence in the Latin music industry in five music genres – pop, tropical, regional Mexican, rock/alternative, and urban. Since its initial telecast, it has helped launch the careers of many Latin music artists - Selena, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Ricky Martin just to name a few. This year is no different as Univision prepares for an unforgettable gala evening celebrating the 25th anniversary of Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina (Our Awards to Latin Music) Thursday, Feb. 21.
Premio Lo Nuestro was the first Latin music awards show and the most popular in the United States that entails the participation of Latin celebrities and artists not only at its awards show but also at its red carpet. This year’s awards ceremony hosts once again are actress and singer Ninel Conde and Mexican singer Pedro Fernandez
As the big day approaches the Latin artist confirmations have started, thus far two bachata singers who have the most nomination this year (seven each) Romeo Santos and Prince Royce. Joining them is another Dominican merengue star Juan Luis Guerra, representing Puerto Rico is reggaeton singer Don Omar and the merengue singer Olga Tañón who is the top Premio Lo Nuestro award winner. Mexico has the most artist confirmations - pop duo Jessy & Joy, 3BallMTY, regional music band La Arrolladora Banda El Limón and regional singer and songwriter América Sierra. As for Cuba, the Cuban-American popular singer, Pitbull, with hip-hop, merengue and pop under his belt.
The night will also premiere the return of two well-known international artists. After 10 years of absence from the limelight, Colombian rock singer Carlos Vives will debut his new single from his studio album “Volví a Nacer,” and Mexican singer Thalia returns from five years of tending to her family. She returns to premiere a few songs from her latest album “Habítame Siempre.”
Premio Lo Nuestro's 25th anniversary special will also pay tribute to the late regional Mexican music diva star Jenni Rivera who has five nominations this year. Her unexpected death last year has been a tremendous loss in the music industry and to her fans.
The 25th Anniversary Edition of Premio Lo Nuestro will air on the Univision Network direct from Miami’s American Airlines Arena on Feb. 21 starting with the red carpet arrival pre-show at 7 p.m. ET/PT (6 p.m. Central) followed by the awards show presentation at 8 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central).
Nominees were chosen from artists who receive the most radio airplay during the eligibility period then fans cast their votes to determine the winners.
