Entrants in the inaugural Southernmost Marathon & Half Marathon, dubbed the "SoMo," can follow a 26.2-mile or 13.1-mile route while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and scenic avenues of the United States' southernmost city. The Key West-based race is set for Saturday, Oct. 12, with associated events scheduled Thursday through Monday, Oct. 10-14.The marathon is to begin at 5:30 a.m. Saturday and the half-marathon at 6 a.m. The start and finish lines for both are at Pat Croce's Rum Barrel, 528 Front St., the event's presenting sponsor.
Racers in the marathon are to run a flat, fast course that includes Key West's historic Old Town and Atlantic Ocean shoreline, neighboring Stock Island and the Keys' Overseas Highway to mile marker 9. Half-marathon contenders are to race along Key West's Atlantic Ocean shore and through Old Town.
Water and "fueling" stations are to be located along both courses.
Runners can pick up their packets at the Rum Barrel from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, or during a race expo from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11. Pre-race dinner specials are to be offered at the Rum Barrel and other Key West restaurants.
On race day spectators can watch and applaud participants at "cheer zones" at Key West's Salute! On The Beach, 1000 Atlantic Blvd., and Stock Island's Lazy Dog Adventures, 5114 Overseas Highway at Hurricane Hole Marina.
An awards ceremony and party with live music are set for 6-11 p.m. Saturday at the Rum Barrel.
Family-fun paddleboard races for the general public and Special Olympics athletes are scheduled Sunday, Oct. 13, to benefit the Keys' Special Olympics. Other weekend attractions include watersports excursions, live music, food and drink specials and a performance by Key West Burlesque.
Registration is $110 per person for the full marathon or $85 per person for the half marathon.
