A pregnant woman was struck and killed Sunday evening while she attempted to cross a highway in Gainesville and the motorist who struck the woman may face charges, officials said.
The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. on Ga. 365 near Mud Creek Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Investigators said Kimberly M. Coates, 29, of Alto, was attempting to cross the highway from the east shoulder to the west at the intersection of Mud Creek Road when she was struck by a Chevrolet Cruze, GSP’s spokesman Gordy Wright said. The Chevrolet was heading south on the highway in the right lane when troopers said the woman entered the path of the vehicle.
The driver, 38-year-old Joshua Ian Buehler, of Atlanta, attempted to avoid striking Coates, but failed, troopers said. Coates and her child were pronounced dead the scene, Wright said. He did not say how long Coates had been pregnant.
Charges may be pending once the investigation is complete, Wright said.
