A pregnant woman was struck and killed Sunday evening while she attempted to cross a highway in Gainesville and the motorist who struck the woman may face charges, officials said.

The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. on Ga. 365 near Mud Creek Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Investigators said Kimberly M. Coates, 29, of Alto, was attempting to cross the highway from the east shoulder to the west at the intersection of Mud Creek Road when she was struck by a Chevrolet Cruze, GSP’s spokesman Gordy Wright said. The Chevrolet was heading south on the highway in the right lane when troopers said the woman entered the path of the vehicle.

The driver, 38-year-old Joshua Ian Buehler, of Atlanta, attempted to avoid striking Coates, but failed, troopers said. Coates and her child were pronounced dead the scene, Wright said. He did not say how long Coates had been pregnant.

Charges may be pending once the investigation is complete, Wright said.

Man Blocks and Masturbates in Front of Jogger

Police are searching for a man who reportedly blocked the path of a jogger and began masturbating in front of her Sunday night in Athens.

As of Monday, officers were still searching for the vehicle, a dark blue Acura TL with tinted windows, and the suspect, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. on Prince Avenue near Athens Regional Medical Center, police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said. The 24-year-old woman told police she was jogging when a vehicle with the driver’s side window down stopped, partially blocking the sidewalk in the 800 block of Prince Avenue, Sorrow said.

“She stopped because her path was blocked,” Sorrow said. “She asked the male if he needed directions. When she realized he was masturbating, she ran a safe distance away and called police”

The suspect is described as a black man with a baldhead and no facial hair, police said. He appeared to be in his 30s, and was possibly wearing a white t-shirt, Sorrow said. Officers search the area but were unable to locate the man or the vehicle, police said.

Man Beaten and Robbed by Knife-Wielding Thief

A man was hospitalized Sunday after being slammed to the ground and kicked in the face by a robber armed with a knife in Athens.

Police have identified a suspect, but no arrest has been made, according to the Athens-Clarke County police.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. when the victim said he was walking from Athens Garden to his home on Gaines School Road, police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said. The man said he was walking behind Willowood Shopping Center when a man came up behind him and started walking with him, Sorrow said.

The man asked him if he wanted any weed, when he said no, the man attempted to shake his hand, Sorrow said. At that point time, the male slammed him on his back and kicked him in the face, Sorrow said.

The suspect pulled a knife from his pocket and demanded the victim give up everything, Sorrow said. The victim gave him his phone, cigarettes, and a pocketknife valued at $207, she said. The victim went to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment, Sorrow said.
