Three young children were rescued after the van they were in was swept into the ocean in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Tuesday. According to WESH on March 5, their mother, who is said to also be pregnant, somehow drove straight into the rough waters with her kids screaming in the back as lifeguards went in to save the family.
Onlookers caught the action on video as the van is in danger of being covered by the waves. The men immediately took action to pull the three terrified children, ages 10, nine and three, out before they all drowned.
The pregnant woman, who is believed to be from South Carolina, walked away from the scene seeming to not be interested in how her children are doing. Witnesses said that she seemed incoherent at the time. The family is said to be okay but they were all taken to the hospital for observation.
Authorities are still investigating how and why this incident happened in the first place. Vehicles are allowed on the beach but witnesses said that the woman suddenly took a sharp turn into the ocean.
Tim Tesseneer, one of the first men to save the children, said that he heard one of the kids screaming that their mother was trying to kill them.
"The two in the back seat was crying, with their arms out saying 'Our mommy's trying to kill us, please help,’” he said.
They were the ones that told him they had another sibling in the vehicle as the other men ran to get the baby out before it was too late. This dramatic rescue proves that these guys are heroes that saved these children’s lives.
The three siblings will be placed with relatives soon. Their mother has been admitted to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
