Pregnant Glendale teen hit by police officer

Glendale-- A pregnant teen was hit by a car on Saturday, which was driven by a Glendale police officer. The 17-year-old girl was crossing a street in Glendale when the car driven by the officer struck the girl.

Areona Rice reports, she had the right-of-way as the walk signal was present when the police officer approached the intersection as the 5 months pregnant teen entered the crosswalk. The officer proceeded through the crosswalk, striking the girl.

“The police officer came -- was in the turning lane, and he just kept turning. And I was like in the middle of the crosswalk. He was going about 10 to 15 miles an hour -- hit me on my side,” Rice said.

Luckily, the young girl only sustained minor injuries, and the unborn baby is said to be healthy and uninjured from the accident.

“It could have been a lot worse than it was. Even the ambulance (paramedic) told me that I am a very, very, very lucky girl to still be alive or to have my baby still alive,” Rice said.

The officer that hit the girl stopped to offer the girl help. The Glendale Police Department says they are, "looking into this incident and that the department is glad both the girl and the officer are OK."
