Predictions for the 2014 Emmy’s

See also

Yes, it’s that time of year again when the year’s best in TV all come together and see who had the better season. The Emmy’s used to be one of those award shows that was predictable and that you could guess who was going to win category to category, but in recent years that has changed. There have been a whole mess of good shows coming to TV making it harder and harder to choose what is the best one.

Former SNL cast member and now host of The Late Night Show, Seth Meyers, will be hosting the show this year. He should make a good name for himself as the host as he is good at thinking on his feet and is used to poking fun at celebrities and be successful at it (see Weekend Update for evidence).

Below is the list of the nominations and some predictions on each of the categories.

DRAMA
Lead Actress

Michelle Dockery - Downtown Abbey
Claire Danes - Homeland
Robin Wright - House of Cards
Lizzy Caplan - Masters of Sex
Kerry Washington - Scandal
Julianna Margulies - The Good Wife

Claire Danes and Robin Wright are the front runners for this category, but Kerry Washington or Lizzy Caplan could steal this win away.

Lead Actor
Bryan Cranston - Breaking Bad
Kevin Spacey - House of Cards
Jon Hamm - Mad Men
Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom
Woody Harrelson - True Detective
Matthew McConaughey - True Detective

Bryan Cranston deserves this role for his unforgettable role in Breaking Bad, but the award will likely going to Harrelson or McConaughey for their role in True Detective.

Supporting Actress
Anna Gunn - Breaking Bad
Dame Maggie Smith - Downtown Abbey
Joanne Froggatt - Downtown Abbey
Lena Headey - Game of Thrones
Christina Hendricks - Mad Men
Christine Baranski - The Good Wife

This category is up in the air. Dame Maggie Smith has won it before in the past and has a solid chance of winning it again, but look for Anna Gunn or Christine Baranski to maybe come away with the steal.

Supporting Actor
Aaron Paul - Breaking Bad
Jim Carter - Downtown Abbey
Peter Dinklage - Game of Thrones
Mandy Patinkin - Homeland
Jon Voight - Ray Donovan
Josh Charles - The Good Wife

Aaron Paul or Peter Dinklage will most likely win this award with Paul getting the edge because Breaking Bad was in it’s final season.

Guest Actress
Diana Rigg - Game of Thrones
Kate Mara - House of Cards
Allison Janney - Masters of Sex
Kate Burton - Scandal
Margo Martindale - The Americans
Jane Fonda - The Newsroom

Jane Fonda or Allison Janney are favorites to win this award but Kate Burton could steal because of how much her guest appearance effected the show.

Guest Actor
Paul Giamatti - Downtown Abbey
Reg E. Cathy - House of Cards
Robert Morse - Mad Men
Beau Bridges - Masters of Sex
Joe Moton - Scandal
Dylan Baker - The Good Wife

Beau Bridges is a favorite, but Paul Giamatti could come away with the win as well.

Best Drama
Breaking Bad
Downtown Abbey
Game of Thrones
House of Cards
Mad Men
True Detective

Breaking Bad is the front runner considering the show took home the Golden Globe in February for best drama but True Detective is the dark horse in the category and stands a chance to get it as well.

COMEDY
Lead Actress

Lena Dunham - Girls
Melissa McCarthy - Mike & Molly
Edie Falco - Nurse Jackie
Taylor Schilling - Orange is the New Black
Amy Poehler - Parks and Recreation
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Veep

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Edie Falco are the favorites because they’ve won it before but Taylor Schilling is certainly the dark horse in this category especially considering how the show seems to be all everyone’s talking about.

Lead Actor
Ricky Gervais - Derek
Matt LeBlanc -Episodes
Don Cheadle - House of Lies
Louis C.K. - Louie
William H. Macy - Shameless
Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory

All the nominees have found success with awards but Matt LeBlanc or Jim Parsons should be able to take this award because they are fan favorites.

Supporting Actress
Julie Bowen - Modern Family
Allison Janney - Mom
Kate Mulgrew - Orange is the New Black
Kate McKinnon - Saturday Night Live
Mayim Bialik - The Big Bang Theory
Anna Chlumsky - Veep

Mayim Bialik will mostly take home this award though Julie Bowen and Allison Janney each had good seasons with their shows.

Supporting Actor
Andre Braugher - Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Adam Driver - Girls
Ty Burrell - Modern Family
Jesse Tyler Ferguson - Modern Family
Fred Armisen - Portlandia
Tony Hale - Veep

This award is truly up in the air as there is no real clear favorite. Ty Burrell has the slight advantage because he’s won it before but it’s really anyone’s game.

Guest Actress
Natasha Lyonne - Orange is the New Black
Uzo Aduba - Orange is the New Black
Laverne Cox - Orange is the New Black
Tina Fey - Saturday Night Live
Melissa McCarthy - Saturday Night Live

Guest Actor
Nathan Lane - Modern Family
Steve Buscemi - Portlandia
Louis C.K. - Saturday Night Live
Jimmy Fallon - Saturday Night Live
Bob Newhart - The Big Bang Theory
Gary Cole - Veep

Nathan Lane is always the scene stealer in Modern Family but Jimmy Fallon or Bob Newhart will likely win this award. Fallon’s guest hosting on SNL was the highest rating episode of the year and might help him edge out for the win.

Best Comedy
Louie
Modern Family
Orange is the New Black
Silicon Valley
The Big Bang Theory
Veep

It’s up in the air between The Big Bang Theory, Veep, and Orange is the New Black. Those shows have been nominated the most in the Comedy category and each have proven to be worth giving the award to.

MINISERIES
Lead Actress

Sarah Paulson - American Horror Story: Coven
Jessica Lange - American Horror Story: Coven
Helena Bonham Carter - Burton and Taylor
Minnie Driver - Return to Zero
Kristen Wiig - The Spoils of Babylon
Cicely Tyson - The Trip to Bountiful

Jessica Lange has been nominated every year for this category since American Horror Story started and has a chance of winning this year, but the winner will most likely be Minnie Driver.

Lead Actor
Chiwetel Ejifor - Dancing on the Edge
Martin Freeman - Fargo
Billy Bob Thornton - Fargo
Idris Elba - Luther
Benedit Cumberbatch - Sherlock: His Last Vow
Mark Ruffalo - The Normal Heart

This is another toss up for the winner but Idris Elba has the strongest chance considering what his miniseries was about. Mark Ruffalo could come away with the win as well.

Supporting Actress
Frances Conroy - American Horror Story: Coven
Kathy Bates - American Horror Story: Coven
Angela Bassett - American Horror Story: Coven
Allison Tolman - Fargo
Ellen Burstyn - Flowers in the Attic
Julia Roberts - The Normal Heart

Kathy Bates and Julia Roberts are the early favorites because of their proven worth at winning awards, but Ellen Burstyn could be a dark favorite for her powerful role in Flowers in the Attic.

Supporting Actor
Colin Hanks - Fargo
Martin Freeman - Sherlock: His Last Vow
Alfred Molina - The Normal Heart
Matt Bomer - The Normal Heart
Jim Parsons - The Normal Heart
Joe Mantello - The Normal Heart

The Normal Heart miniseries will probably come away with the award since it has 4 out of the 6 nominees. It could go to any one of the four and but Martin Freeman might come away with the award too.

Best Miniseries
Sherlock: His Last Vow
American Horror Story: Coven
Bonnie & Clyde
Fargo
Luther
The White Queen
Treme

Considering what has the most nominations for the other categories, Luther, Sherlock and American Horror Story have the strongest shot. Though Bonnie & Clyde would be a fun win since that series was a good one to watch.
