Powerhouse Combat Sports latest event, "Predators", held in Alamogordo on September 4th drew crowds from far and wide. Fighters from three different states came together to give Alamogordo an awesome event. With a grand total of 16 matches, spectators had the chance to witness 12 fighters make their debut. The event was action packed and there was never a dull moment.
To start off the event, fans got a taste of the future with two junior kick boxing matches. Trey Marquez, a fighter from Alamogordo's Tiger Town Martial Arts, was matched with Juan Torres, a fighter with Las Cruces Bone Crusher. Marquez was excited and anxious to be fighting in his home town and hopes to have a future in MMA. Torres won the match by decision. Another junior kick boxer from Tiger Town, Fernando Palacios, also competed against a Las Cruces Bone Crusher, J.P.Garcia. Garcia took the match by split decision.
The amateur card was full of exciting moments as fighters from New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona battled against one another. For many fighters, this was their debut match. For others, like Brad Nordquist, this was one more fight to add to their record. Nordquist a professional fighter from Tiger Town Martial Arts, was
pit against Oscar Granados, an independent fighter out of Carlsbad in the main event of the evening. Known for his triangle chokes, Nordquist was hoping to stand and bang with Granados. Both fighters were looking to knock out the other, but in the end, Nordquist took the fight with a triangle choke in round one.
Another Alamogordo fighter, Tommy Williams of Unity Freestyle Gym, made his professional debut against Nathan Torres of FIT NHB. Williams, a veteran fighter originally from Deming, showed great heart and amazing skill. Torres went for a heel hook while Williams defended with strikes to the head.
While trying to escape from the submission, Williams sustained a knee injury. As of press time, it is unknown the extent of the injury. Williams hopes to be back in the cage the next opportunity he gets.
After an action packed night, some fighters went home to celebrate wins, others to celebrate an exciting night in the cage. At the end of it all, we would like to thank Dave May of Powerhouse for putting on an awesome event, Freddy Sandoval of Que Loco for providing the cage. We would also like to thank the sponsors, Shooters nightclub and James Sears Construction for making the event possible.
