“The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” – Proverbs 16:9
According to Webster’s Dictionary, a “notion” is “an idea or opinion,” and “preconceive” means “to form (as an opinion) prior to actual knowledge or experience.” Sadly, many of God’s sons and daughters don’t walk in the steps that He has ordered for His children, because they allow their own preconceived notions to conceal their Divinely-laid path. Am I talking to you today, my brother? Is this your predicament, my sister?
While we should walk in expectancy of God’s promises, we shouldn’t allow the “how” God will bring our expected end to clutter our passageway or create an impasse to our provision. There are times when God will be very specific in how He tells us to go about bringing forth a matter; but again, it is God telling us, and not us telling God!
The Hebrew word for “mind” as used in this verse is lab (pr. lab), which are “the feelings, will, and even the intellect; likewise, for the center of anything” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Where is your mind at, my brother? Whose will are you submitting to, my sister? Are you being led by the fickle and unreliable fancy of your feelings, or is the Word of God a lamp unto your feet and a light for your path (Psalm 119:105)?
To “plan,” as used here, is chasab (pr. khaw-shab), and means “to plait or interpenetrate, to weave or fabricate.” Webster defines “plait” as “a braid of material”; and further defines “interpenetrate” as “to penetrate between, within, or throughout.” When we focus on preconceived notions, then we are unsuccessfully attempting to lead God by fruitlessly trying to weave our will into the Father’s Will; rather than the other way around.
When we allow God to “direct” out steps, we kuwn (pr. koon); we allow God to “set up, establish, ordain, order, prepare, provide, make ready.” When we follow preconceived notions, then we are attempting to establish ourselves, which is walking on sinking sand; and we will not stand when the storms of life come calling for us. But when we forsake these notions for the perfect Will of the Father, then He prepares us, establishes us, qualifies us, makes the way, and provides for our every need along His path.
Are you tired of traveling on the perpetual path of preconceived notions, family? Then it’s time for a new plan—a good plan! It’s time for a course correction, and Divine direction from the One who wove your divine destiny into your DNA when He knit you together and placed you in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13).
Father, thank You for directing our steps. Most Merciful God, we repent for entertaining preconceived notions, and we forsake and cast down these ungodly distractions. We submit our will to Your Perfect Will, and we yield our thoughts to Your Faultless Thoughts. We decree and declare that our feet are permanently and securely bound to the steps that You have ordered for us. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we are led by You every step of the way. Amen and Amen.
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to allow God to guide your every step. Choose to cast down the false start of preconceived notions, and to pick up the Divine Direction of your Perfect Father. And continue to fight the good fight of walking in your Daddy’s footsteps; for God, your Ultimate Imprint, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
