The Puppy Love 5K put on by Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) and presented by Blue Buffalo is back! It will take place on Sunday, March 16th, beginning at 7:00 a.m., a sunnier schedule with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. It will help all of the orphan pets that are seeking a lucky forever home!

HWAC believes in the magic of the human-animal bond. They believe that the magic will take a mischievous twist at the 5th Annual Puppy Love 5K, presented by Blue Buffalo. The Center is hoping that some of St. Patty’s Day luck is harnessed for their orphan pets.

This year, Scenic Highway 101 in Solana Beach will be turned into a rainbow road complete with rescue-loving adoptable pup-rechauns; “canine cheerleaders” present to say a very special surprise “thank you” to all of the participants. The “pups of gold”, many of whom have faced a tough road of their own, hope to provide the most valuable fortune of all to their adoptive families, the unconditional love of a forever friend.

Another change is that the fundraising event has been moved from February to March to accommodate the weird weather that the U.S. has been experiencing and organizers hope the only showers will be those of golden-hearted supporters forming teams to raise more life-saving “green” than ever before on behalf of orphan pets.

In addition to the two separate races (running event at 8:00 a.m. and walking event at 8:20 a.m.), the festivities will feature St. Patrick’s Day-themed fun at the “After Paw-ty” in the Wagging Wellness Village. Families and teams will gather to celebrate their luck of having found furry friends of their own with music, a human-canine costume contest, dog agility, kid’s activities including face painting and take-home crafts, food, and dozens of interactive heath and pet related booths.

“This has always been such a fun event,” stated Special Events Supervisor Regina Barrella, “but it really feels right that it falls near Saint Patrick’s Day this year. The fact that we have such great supporters who come out to help the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center makes us all feel incredibly lucky.”

Race entry for the 5th Annual Puppy Love 5K is $35 for adult runners and walkers and $15 for junior runners and walkers with great team discounts available. For more information or to register, visit or call 858-756-4117 x379. Day-of festivities begins at 7:00 a.m. and the first race kicks off at 8:00 a.m.
