With the dawn of ‘Reality Shows’ it’s all about the “Mighty Dollar”. The more controversy that the show’s writers can stir up the better ratings the show will obtain. It’s all about the Benjamines. Pastor Jay Haizlip, Minister Deitrick Haddon, Pastor Wayne Chaney, Bishop Ron Gibson, and Bishop Clarence McClendon & Bishop Noel Jones are the “Preachers of LA” that airs on the Oxygen network on Wednesday evenings.
There are many people who don’t want to ‘give to the church’ (tithe) because they feel that preachers are taking their money and they live a lavish lifestyle. “Why am I buying that man’s car, home, clothes & trips when I can barely put food on my table?” First of all some people don’t realize that their source of prosperity doesn’t come from man, but the gift comes from God who gives to His people.
One of the Preachers on the show was quoted to say, “The Bible says that those of us who sow among us should reap from us, that’s implying that preachers should be taken care of.” (Haizlip) Most of the Pastors that are not on a reality show (like those mentioned below) sustain their lifestyles by singing, speaking engagements, writing & selling books, and a small stipend that they usually tithe back to the church. They don’t flaunt their blessings, nonetheless, they show people (from the Bible) how anyone can achieve even greater things in this lifetime.
Oh and by the way, if you’re a public entity, the world doesn’t need to know what goes on in the privacy of your home. Some things are personal between you and your spouse. If Christians are no better than “The Kardashians”, “Real Housewives of XYZ”, or “Kendra on Top”, then why would ‘non-believers’ find gratification in watching so called Preachers gloat, argue, and disrespect each other on national TV?
You won’t find Pastor’s Marvin Winans, Shirley Caesar, T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joel Osteen, George Davis, Joseph Prince, Donnie McClurkin, John Hagee or a number of other mega church Pastors on a TV reality show exploiting their business and airing their private lives. Sure they enjoy the sacred union with their “wives” like any man, but putting ones business on TV doesn’t give God and glory and neither does flaunting their wealth. These preachers are human beings, but they are called apart from the everyday person. They put on their pants one leg at a time and they have issues like the best of us, but they are people who follow Jesus Christ and they show the world that Christians are different people.
No, Christians should not think they’re better than everyone else, but they are set apart from those who don’t know God. Oh, and by the way, on the “Preachers of LA” reality show – Where is Jesus? It shouldn’t be all about the ‘Preacher’, but Jesus should be the focus of all reality. What sets Christians apart from any other people? Why follow Christ if Christians are no better than anyone else?
