Well the ‘Preachers of LA’ reality TV show about pastors in Los Angeles has certainly brought the drama always surrounding the Christian church, especially when folks focus on the prosperity gospel aspect of these modern day times. The first full video episode of ‘Preachers of LA’ has been released online, and the show itself is a ratings bonanza for Oxygen, with more than 1.1 million viewers.
When the ‘Preachers of LA’ full episode first aired, Twitter went crazy with the #PreachersofLA hashtag, causing even non-Christians to peek into the trending topic. And that’s exactly what some folks are afraid of – the fact that the focus on the “car porn” and “house porn” displayed in the show sets a bad example for folks seeking Jesus, or those of us who are already bondservants of Christ.
As expected, the calls to boycott ‘Preachers of LA’ have begun, just like they did for the show about pastors’ wives, called ‘The Sisterhood,’ until that reality show was taken down.
“Time to unite and start the process to stop the ‘Preachers of L.A.’ from airing this fall!” reads the tagline of Facebook.com/StopPreachersofLA, a page now 555 people strong. Count this Christian TV Examiner as the 555th “like” for the Facebook page full of folks threatening advertisers and praying for the take-down of the show, although I only liked it in the vein of a spy noting the progress of the efforts, not that I want the show to disappear.
No, I am as entranced and enthralled as all the other folks watching POLA online at Amazon, with the first "Comeback" episode still airing free of charge as of this writing.
As for those Change.org petitions also crying out for the boycott of POLA? Probably ones I won’t be signing anytime soon, although I’m a sucker for signing nearly every Change.org petition that lands in my Gmail inbox.
God can take ‘Preachers of LA’ down if He wants, in the way that He wants. He’s so good like that. In the meantime, I’ve got the Holy Spirit-led feeling that something special is going to come out of POLA. I can feel it in the air. Can you not perceive it?
