Law exists in every aspect of our lives. For those that acknowledge and recognize, there is the Law of God, there is the Law of Nature, and the Law of Man. Understanding law(s) help us to live together as men and women, boys and girls which is why Pre-Law Academies are an asset to our schools in presenting scenarios that students can begin to live through first hand experiences examples of how due process of the law unfolds in daily living throughout communities around the country.
The Pre-Law Academy at Independence Middle School (IMS), under the direction of Heather Lukasik, has had a very busy and successful year. The Palm Beach County Bar Association’s North County Section recently made a charitable donation to the Pre-Law Academy at IMS in Jupiter. The gift was used to build a courtroom set for the students. On June 3, 2014, the Palm Beach County North Section Board Members participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication for the Pre-Law furniture in the Pre-Law Academy. WPTV Channel 5 showcased the dedication on the 6:00 p.m. news.
Mrs. Lukasik says, “I am so excited for the Law students to be able to hold a mock trial with real courtroom furniture. My goal was to create an environment for the kids to be able to interact and present a trial as though they were in a real courtroom. The Jupiter/Palm Beach community has been so supportive of our program. We are the only Pre-Law Academy in the North end and it is really amazing what we have done in three years.”
Pre-Law Academy at IMS provides students an opportunity to examine those laws which have an impact on citizen’s lives. Students examine legal issues, including, but not limited to; laws, forensics, persuasive and legal writing. Students participate in mock trials, debates, critical thinking and analysis of research. Students leave the program with a deeper understanding of their role in society. The Pre-Law Academy at Independence Middle is part of the Choice and Career Options Department within the School District of Palm Beach County. The Palm Beach County Bar Association’s North County Section makes financial contributions to local programs and services, which are law related.
