Pre-K thru Algebra

Save a little paper this week! Take a little time to expose your children to online learning. Young children will enjoy "playing" on the computer while learning to new skills. In addition, young children will have the bonus of learning computer skills as they engage in fun activities.

The IXL website is an online educational resource and activity website. Children can practice skills from counting pennies to working out Algebraic equations. The IXL website is jam packed with educational games. The activities are divided by grade level from pre-school and Kindergarten to the eighth grade. In addition, Algebra skills can be taught for a variety of skill and grade levels. The website is actively working on expanding their mathematical resources to higher levels of skill and adding an extensive language arts program.

In addition, the IXL website meets state standards on skills that American children are expected to master. One may search the IXL website for particular states and their required skills.

Guest may visit the IXL website at any time to play fun educational games to introduce and improve skills. In addition, a membership may be purchased. Why purchase a membership, when you may "play" for free? Members will have access to comprehensive reporting that will compare your child's skill level and where he/she stands in comparison with the required state mandatory progress and skill mastery. It is a wonderful resource to have knowledge of your child's preparedness for standardized testing. The IXL program will even email your child's progress to you!

IXL Membership is an affordable program. You may sign up as an individual for as little as $9.99 per month or $79 for a year and there is also a classroom membership option for $199.00 for a year of membership.

I tested the program with a preschool age child. It was a fun and easy to manage game (Skill Set). We sampled the J.4Count pennies. A picture was presented to the child of pennies. The objective is to count the pennies and then record the number of cents that the pennies equal into a blank space. After counting the pennies and recording the data, the child learns to manipulate the computer keyboard by pressing enter to electronically check the answer to the question.

During the game, the IXL records data and shares the date to the right of the screen. The number of attempted questions, time of play and correct percentage are recorded and shared. As an added plus, awards are earned by students as they progress through the skill set. Digital surprises may be unlocked to add to the fun of the game and to learning. The skills are presented in vivid colors and fun games to engage and educate children.

This is also an excellent website for adults to learn and master algebraic skills! Visit IXL and have a fun educational learning activity for your child! IXL is a wonderful resource for a homeschooling family too!

You may find educational computer games on disc at your local Ann Arbor, Michigan Walmart and Best Buy!
